Abstract
This report reviews unitised traffic activity across Irish and Northern Irish ports in the fourth quarter of 2023, focusing on Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo), Lift-on/Lift-off (LoLo), ferry passenger, and passenger vehicle markets. RoRo traffic through Republic of Ireland ports declined by 2% to 289,971 units, while Northern Ireland ports recorded a 4% increase to 222,740 units, leaving all-island RoRo traffic 1% higher than Q4 2022. The decline in Republic of Ireland RoRo volumes was mainly driven by reduced ROI–GB traffic, affected by changes in Dublin–Liverpool services, while Rosslare Europort recorded strong growth and its highest Q4 RoRo volume reported by the IMDO. LoLo container traffic improved, with Republic of Ireland volumes rising by 5% to 278,850 TEUs and all-island volumes increasing by 5%, ending a period of consecutive quarterly declines. Passenger activity was weaker, with all-island passenger numbers down 4% and passenger vehicles down 5%. Overall, the report highlights a subdued but resilient unitised freight market, shaped by inflationary pressures, higher interest rates, and sluggish global growth.
