Abstract
This report examines unitised traffic activity across Irish and Northern Irish ports during the first half of 2024, covering Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo), Lift-on/Lift-off (LoLo), ferry passenger, and passenger vehicle markets. It finds that Ireland’s maritime transport sector remained resilient despite wider economic pressures. RoRo traffic in the Republic of Ireland was broadly stable, with 584,212 units handled, a 1% decrease compared with H1 2023, while Northern Ireland RoRo traffic increased by 2%. ROI–GB and ROI–EU RoRo routes each declined by 1%, although direct EU services remained well above pre-Brexit levels. The LoLo container market performed strongly, with all-island volumes rising by 7% to 691,286 TEUs and Republic of Ireland volumes increasing by 8%, led by growth at Dublin Port and supported by Cork and Waterford. Passenger activity was weaker, with all-island ferry passenger numbers down 2% and passenger vehicle volumes down 4%. Overall, the report highlights a stable freight market, strong container growth, and continued adjustment in passenger and RoRo markets during H1 2024.
