Abstract
This report reviews unitised traffic activity across Irish and Northern Irish ports in the third quarter of 2024, focusing on Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo), Lift-on/Lift-off (LoLo), and passenger ferry markets. The report finds contrasting trends across the unitised freight sector. Republic of Ireland RoRo volumes declined by 1% compared with Q3 2023, reflecting continued subdued demand and small reductions in driver-accompanied traffic, while unaccompanied RoRo traffic remained stable. Northern Ireland RoRo volumes increased by 2%, leaving all-island RoRo traffic broadly unchanged. In contrast, the LoLo container market recorded strong growth, with Republic of Ireland volumes rising by 15% to 319,805 TEUs, a record quarterly total. Growth was evident across Dublin, Cork and Waterford, supported by stronger containerised cargo demand and some modal shift from RoRo to LoLo services. The passenger market was slightly weaker, with ferry passenger numbers falling by 1% in the Republic of Ireland and 2% in Northern Ireland. Overall, the report concludes that Irish unitised traffic remained stable and resilient in Q3 2024, with strong LoLo growth offsetting weaker RoRo and passenger trends.
