Abstract
This report reviews unitised traffic activity across Irish and Northern Irish ports in the third quarter of 2023, focusing on Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo), Lift-on/Lift-off (LoLo), and related passenger markets. Republic of Ireland RoRo traffic declined by 2% to 291,879 units compared with Q3 2022, with both ROI–GB and ROI–EU routes also falling by 2%. Northern Ireland RoRo traffic performed more strongly, increasing by 3% to 225,295 units, leaving all-island RoRo traffic broadly unchanged. The LoLo container market was weaker, with Republic of Ireland volumes falling by 6% to 277,609 TEUs, the lowest third-quarter performance of the post-Brexit period for Irish LoLo ports. Northern Ireland LoLo volumes remained broadly stable. Passenger activity was mixed, with Republic of Ireland tourist passenger numbers increasing by 2%, while Northern Ireland passenger numbers declined by 2%. Overall, the report highlights a subdued but resilient unitised freight market, shaped by high inflation, rising interest rates, geopolitical uncertainty, and slower global container trade, while domestic demand helped Irish ports avoid sharper declines.
