Abstract
This report reviews unitised traffic activity across Irish and Northern Irish ports in the fourth quarter of 2022, focusing on Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo), Lift-on/Lift-off (LoLo), and passenger ferry markets. The report finds that Q4 2022 was marked by a slowdown in freight activity, as inflationary pressures, higher energy costs, and weaker demand for merchandise goods began to affect port volumes. Republic of Ireland RoRo traffic declined by 3% to 295,192 units, while Northern Ireland RoRo traffic fell by 7%, leaving all-island RoRo traffic down 5% compared with Q4 2021. Despite this quarterly decline, 2022 remained a milestone year for Irish RoRo traffic, with annual volumes surpassing 1.2 million units for the first time. The report also highlights the continuing post-Brexit shift in route patterns, with direct ROI–EU RoRo traffic remaining much higher than pre-Brexit levels and accounting for approximately one-third of Republic of Ireland RoRo volumes. LoLo container traffic weakened more sharply, with Republic of Ireland volumes falling by 8% to 265,506 TEUs, the lowest quarterly total since Q2 2020, while Northern Ireland LoLo volumes declined by 13%. Passenger traffic showed signs of recovery, with Republic of Ireland passenger numbers only 2% below Q4 2019 levels and Northern Ireland passenger numbers 5% above Q4 2019. Overall, the report presents a unitised freight market that slowed in late 2022 but remained resilient after the disruptions of Brexit and COVID-19.
