Science: 5th and 6th Class: Build your own seismometer – learning about forces under the seaEarthquakes occur when parts of the Earth’s crust and upper mantle move suddenly. Large earthquakes can cause catastrophic amounts of damage so it’s very important to be able to predict when they might happen. Earthquakes are detected using a seismometer which detects vibrations in the earth. In class, groups of students can work together to make a simple model of a seismometer to demonstrate how they work. The students will experience working in groups and through a creative process develop skills intrinsic to working scientifically

Science: 5th and 6th class. Experimenting with dissolutionThe lesson allows students to explore the effects of solids in hot and cold liquid by conducting a range of experiments mixing different materials in water solutions.
-
Science: 5th and 6th class. Creature feature and chemosynthesis - the hydrothermal vent ecosystemThis lesson provides students with an introduction to the process of life learning about photosynthesis and chemosynthesis. It also introduces students to the hydrothermal vent ecosystem deep under the ocean. Students will also learn about some of the unusual creatures that inhabit this extreme environment highlighting the variety and characteristics of living things at the bottom of the ocean.

Science: 5th and 6th Class: A Whale’s Tale - Meeting marine animals around the worldThe aim of the lesson is to enable children to recognise that there is a great diversity of animals in the ocean. The children will become familiar with the characteristics of a variety of marine animals from different regions and ocean environments around the world. They will also learn about marine pollution affecting the animals that live in the ocean. Note: This lesson plan can be used with the drama lesson plan: A Whale’s Tale – Adventures of living in the Ocean.

Science: 5th and 6th class- Squid Dissection and Project lesson plan and worksheetThe children will be provided with an introduction to the life process of a squid. The will also learn about the external and internal parts of a squid. The children will also explore some of the ways squid have adapted to environmental conditions as well as discuss simple food chains. As an extension the children may complete a project on the different types of squid found in the ocean.

Science: 5th and 6th class- Plant and Animal Life on the Seashore - Creating a Seashore, Species and Seaweed GuideThe children will create a Seashore Species and Seaweed Guide. The lesson plan includes a series of activities for in the classroom and / or on the seashore including completing drawings and illustrations from observation. The children will also write about the seashore, sand, animals and plants demonstrating their understanding of the habitats and the zones where the animals and seaweeds are typically found.
-
Science: 3rd and 4th class - Flood DefencesChildren will explore and experiment with the properties and characteristics of a variety of materials in making a structure based on the theme of creating a flood defence. The children will use their scientific, engineering and mathematical skills.
-
Science: 5th and 6th class- Seashore Exploration and Guided TourConduct a fieldtrip to the seashore exploring the plants and animal life. Working scientifically the children will learn about the variety and characteristics of living things and processes of life typically found on the seashore.

Science: 5th Class and 6th Class_ Materials - Exploring Marine Debris Degradation (Irish and English Version)The aim of the lesson plan is for the children identify and investigate a range of common materials in the immediate environment. The children will observe, investigate and experiment on the degradation effects the environment has on these items.
-
Science: 5th Class and 6th Class – Materials and Change - Exploring Desalinating Saltwater (Irish and English Version)The aim of the lesson plan is for the children to explore the effects of heating on liquids. Desalinating saltwater to create fresh water is used as an example.
-
Science: 1st Class and 2nd Class_ Exploring Materials which will protect Scuba Steve from Electric Fish (Irish and English Version)The aim of the lesson plan is for children to identify materials that allow electricity to pass through them. Experiments and demonstrations are to be conducted by the teacher. Students will become aware of the dangers of electricity as well as learn about animals in the ocean that conduct electricity.
-
Science: 5th Class and 6th Class - Exploring Communication and Echolocation in Cetaceans (Irish and English Version)The aim of the lesson plan is for the children to explore how sound travels through materials.
-
Science: 3rd and 4th Class - Design and Make a Compass (Irish and English Version)The aim of the lesson plan is for the children to explore relationships between magnets and compasses.
-
Science: 1st Class and 2nd Class: Beach Towels - What Material Works Best (Irish and English Version)The aim of the lesson plan is for the children to identify and investigate materials that absorb water.
-

Water pollutionStudents will learn about what causes water pollution and how to be environmentally aware. *Note: Students should understand the concept of the water cycle before moving onto water pollution (see Lesson Plan “Oceans all Around Us”).
-
Oceans all around us: demonstrating a miniture water cycleLooking at the world through science, students can learn about the marine elements of our natural environment and the importance of the water cycle. Students can look at and compare the marine environment to other places locally, nationally and internationally.

Plant and animal life on the seashoreStudents will develop an understanding of the variety species and characteristics of the animals and plants that live on the seashore through scientific drawing and recording. The students will establish an understanding of the processes of life that takes place on the seashore due to environmental conditions and changes constantly taking place (e.g. tides & waves crashing on rocks, salinity of water, heat of the sun, predators) etc. Students will create their own seashore guidebook by recording information and drawing the details of species from the seashore that have been collected for the Explorers Aquarium. Students are to explore and learn about the species and plants through their own investigation and draw them in detail. Students should become familiar with the species and seaweeds names.
