Lesson Plan Geography: Observing the WeatherThe aim of the lesson plans and activities is to help children develop their geographical investigating skills relating to weather observation. The lesson plans and work sheets are cross curricular covering geography, english and art. They are suited for 4th – 6th Class. In these activities, children will make weather badges, learn about Irish weather, and weather around the world, including the influence the ocean currents have on it. This lesson plan has four worksheets involved.

Geography 4th to 6Th Class - People and Places: Ocean Leaders, Champions, and Heroes Wall ProjectThe aim of the lesson plan is for the children to develop ideas and discuss how climate change is affecting the ocean near Ireland and other parts of the world. The children will develop a sense of place and space in Ireland and the world, investigating the wide range of people that are involved in raising awareness and creating solutions to address the issues of Climate Change. This lesson is suitable for 4th to 6th Class.

Geography: 5th and 6th Class : Marine explorers and scientists – learning about people and placesThe lesson provides students with an opportunity to learn about people and places in Ireland. With a focus on marine science and seismology, the students will learn about the type of work marine scientists and seismologists are involved with and the environments they work in. This lesson plan can be adapted to follow and study the life of any scientist on a scientific survey. Students can also learn about the people that work on the research vessel, the research vessel RV Celtic Explorer.

Geography: 5th and 6th class - The deep unknown - discover the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and hydrothermal ventsThe lesson provides students with an understanding of the physical features of the world – under the ocean. Students will learn about tectonic plates and underwater features such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The students will discover how physical features such as hydrothermal vents form in this natural environment, deep under the ocean.

By using the famous VENTure expedition where the Moytirra hydrothermal vents field were discovered in the Mid-Atlantic, the students will investigate, record and communicate their findings about scientists such as Dr Andy Wheeler, the chief scientist of this survey. Students can also learn about the people he works with on the research vessel, the RV Celtic Explorer.

What would you do with the Real Map of Ireland?The phrase “the Real Map of Ireland” is a statement established to highlight that the map of Ireland land area also includes our marine resource. In fact the area of our marine resource is ten times larger than our land area above the sea. This makes Ireland one of the largest maritime States in the European Union. Objective: Establish what an area is and how to measure it. Compare sizes of areas: e.g. the area of the classroom, school property, backyard at home, local park, farms, cities, counties, countries Identify what resources can we use that are on land in the “areas” … what would you find in a park, farm, etc
