A comparative study of Lough Sillan (Co. Cavan) and Lough Dan (Co. Wicklow) revealed that these two Irish lakes differ markedly in their physicoRchemical and faunal characteristics. The possible causes of these observed dissimilarities are reviewed and discussed. Lough Sillan may be classified as moderately eutrophic while Lough Dan is both humic and oligotrophic.en_GB
