The whiting Merlangius merlangus (L) has for over 30 years been the leading demersal species by weight in the landings of commercial fisheries on the east coast of Ireland. The present study was commenced in the autumn of 1959, using samples of both the commercial fishery and the research vessel Cú Feasa. The present paper describes the commercial catch from port samples supplemented with research vessel material where extra detail is desirable.en_GB
